It was the first time i saw a Kuda Kepang. On my way to tuition at bukit panjang, I heard this repetitive music coming from the blocks. It was going on for at least 2 hours. When I passed by the music source, I saw a few young men who looked like malays dancing on the grass patch under the rain carrying a horse between their feets.

I asked my friends about this and she said it was mostly a Indonesian tradition because Malays don’t do it.

It looked and sounded exactly like this:

Those carrying a horse appeared to be in a trance and walking in a awkward fashion, their feets were spread sideways. Beside them, there are men carrying whips who occasionally whip the floor with a loud cracking sound. The ritual was scary to me even as I was standing quite far away. In between, a man brought in a coconut and the “horses” started chasing after him as if they want a bite of the fruit. As the man left, they resumed to the original trance state sometimes kneeling on the floor. My friend told me that they might be eating grass.
